What We Believe

SCC views the following doctrinal positions as essential to the Christian faith.

THE BIBLE

We believe the 39 books of the Old Testament and the 27 books of the New Testament are the inspired Word of God, and as a consequence are completely free from error of any kind. The Bible is the final authority in all matters of belief and behavior and speaks with final authority concerning truth, morality and the proper conduct of mankind. It is the sole and final source of all that we believe. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 1 Peter 1:20-21).

THE TRINITY

We believe only one living and true God exists. He has eternally existed in three distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each of these three persons has the exact same nature and perfections, and as a result is fully worthy of the highest adoration and praise created beings can offer. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; John 17:3; Ephesians 4:4-6).

GOD THE FATHER

We believe God the Father is the ultimate ruler of the entire universe and He works out all things according to His plans and purposes. His sovereignty and work are particularly evident in the areas of creation, providence, and redemption. (Genesis 1:1; 2 Corinthians 1:3; Ephesians 1:3-12; 3:14-15).

GOD THE SON

We believe Jesus Christ is the unique Son of God. At just the right time in history, He was born of the Virgin Mary. As fully God and fully man, His sinless life qualified Him to be the perfect offering for the sins of all humanity. He suffered and died on the cross in our place, rose from the grave on the third day, and later ascended to heaven to the Father’s right hand, where He now carries on His intercessory work on behalf of believers. (Luke 1:35; John 1:1-3, 14; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT

We believe the Holy Spirit has been active for all eternity. His work has primarily been in the areas of creation, revelation, and redemption. His particular work in believers today involves regenerating, baptizing, sealing, indwelling, guiding, teaching, empowering, sanctifying, and preserving all those who become children of God through personal faith in Jesus Christ. (John 3:3-8; 14:16-17; 16:7-15; Romans 8:9–11; Ephesians 1:13-14).

ANGELS

We believe that in eternity past, God created a great host of sinless spiritual beings known as angels to serve at His throne, to carry out His bidding in the world, and to minister to those who are heirs of salvation. Most angels still faithfully serve Him, though some, including Satan, failed morally through pride and rebellion and were cast out of heaven. To this day these demons aggressively oppose the plans and purposes of God in the world. (Matthew 1:20; 4:11; Revelation 5:11-12; 1 Peter 5:8).

HUMANITY

We believe God created people in His own image and that in their original state they were perfect. Humans came into being through a direct creative act rather than through any kind of an evolutionary process. God’s purposes in creating men and women were that they might glorify Him, carry out His desires on earth by loving Him and loving others, and enjoy close fellowship with Him, both here on earth and throughout eternity. (Genesis 1:26-27; 2:7, 18-25).

SIN

We believe Adam and Eve willfully disobeyed the revealed will of God some time after their creation and became sinful people. Each of their descendants, with the single exception of the incarnate Christ, is born in sin and commits sin. As a result, the entire race is alienated from God, stands condemned under His wrath, is inclined toward evil, and is hopelessly lost for all eternity if not for God’s gracious provision of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. (Genesis 3:1-7; Ephesians 2:1-3; Romans 3:9-18, 23).

SALVATION

We believe salvation of a sinner is possible only by the grace of God through personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation is an absolutely free gift from God, which is undeserved and cannot be earned. Man receives His free gift by calling on the Lord, repenting of his sins, believing in his heart, and confessing Jesus as Lord. Those who have been saved by grace have already received the forgiveness of their sins, reconciliation to God, permanent adoption into the family of God, eternal life, and every spiritual provision necessary for life and godliness. (John 1:12-13; 3:16; 5:24; 14:6; Ephesians 1:13-14; 2:8-10; Romans 3:28; 10:9-13).

CHURCH

We believe the universal church of Jesus Christ was founded on the Day of Pentecost and will continue to be built until His return. Christ Himself is the head of the church, which includes all who have experienced salvation. Local churches are organized under the oversight of qualified leadership. (Acts 2:1-41; Colossians 1:18; 1 Corinthians 12:1-27) and are God’s primary agent today for expanding His Kingdom here on earth.

ORDINANCES

We believe the Lord gave His followers the ordinances of water baptism and the Lord’s Supper. These ordinances are not means of receiving salvation or grace, but rather are physical symbols of spiritual realities. Baptism by immersion identifies the believer with the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ and reminds the believer that he has been crucified with Christ and he no longer lives but Christ lives in him. The Lord’s Supper is a reminder of the sacrifice of Christ’s body and blood at the cross. Both ordinances are to be celebrated regularly by the local church. (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 2:38; Romans 6:3-4; 1 Corinthians 11:23-34; Galatians 2:19-20).

MARRIAGE AND SEXUALITY

We believe the term "marriage" has only one meaning and that marriage is sanctioned by God and joins one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture. (Matthew 19:4-6; Genesis 1:27; 2:23-24)

LAST THINGS

We believe all of the events of the present age will be consummated in the powerful, glorious, personal, and bodily return to earth of the Lord Jesus Christ. At some future time, the bodies of the believing dead will be raised to reign joyfully with Christ in glory, while the bodies of the unsaved dead will be raised for final judgment and eternal punishment in hell. The Lord will then reign in righteousness forever in a new heaven and a new earth, where the redeemed will worship God and enjoy Him for all eternity. (Philippians 2:9-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; John 3:36; Revelation 21:1-27; 22:12).
